Portrait of William H. Frey, 1861-1865. (Veteran), St. Joseph County. Enlisted in company B, First Infantry, Sept. 9, 1861, at Burr Oak, for 3 years, age 22. Mustered Sept. 23, 1861. Corporal. Sergeant Major July 29, 1863. Re-enlisted Jan. 1, 1864. Mustered Jan. 4, 1864. Acting Adjutant, July and Aug., 1864. Acting Regimental Quartermaster, Sept. and Oct., 1864. Commissioned Captain, company B, Nov. 1, 1864. Mustered Nov. 21, 1864. Commissioned Brevet Captain, U.S. Volunteers, Aug. 6, 1864, for gallant and distinguished services during the operations on Weldon R.R. Mustered out and honorably discharged near Jeffersonville, Ind., July 9, 1865. Was in the following battles: Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Anna, Tolopotomy Creek, Bethesda Church, Petersburg, Weldon R.R., Peebles Farm and Hatcher's Run. Died Sept. 19, 1880. Buried at Fairfield, Neb. (Descriptive Roll First Michigan Volunteers). |
